Stanley Nwabali, the 28-year-old goalkeeper for Nigeria’s Super Eagles, has announced the passing of his father. Nwabali shared the heartbreaking news on his Instagram story early Friday, writing, *“RIP Dad. Rest in Heaven.”*

A Difficult Time for the Goalkeeper
The sad announcement came just hours after Nwabali was in goal during Nigeria’s 1-1 draw against the Benin Republic in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. The match saw Nigeria secure qualification for the tournament, thanks to Libya’s win over Rwanda earlier that day.

Condolences from Teammates
Nwabali’s teammates, including William Troost-Ekong, Victor Boniface, Moses Simon, and Amas Obasogie, have taken to social media to express their condolences.

A Rising Star in Nigerian Football
Nwabali, currently playing for Chippa United, became Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper in early 2024 under former head coach Jose Peseiro. His stellar performance in the AFCON semi-final against South Africa, where he saved two penalties, cemented his place as a fan favorite.

He is also a nominee for the 2024 CAF Goalkeeper of the Year award, highlighting his exceptional contributions to African football.

Our thoughts are with Stanley Nwabali and his family during this difficult time.
