Chelsea has reportedly opened discussions with Serie A club Napoli for a potential transfer deal involving Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen. The Super Eagles forward gained attention from various clubs following his impressive performance last summer, contributing significantly to Napoli’s Serie A title win.

Osimhen, 25, scored an impressive 31 goals and provided five assists in 39 games across all competitions, with 26 goals coming in the league. Chelsea, currently facing inconsistency and sitting in ninth place in the Premier League, is eager to strengthen its attacking options after failing to qualify for the UEFA Champions League for two consecutive seasons.

Despite signing Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig in the summer, Chelsea has not seen the desired results due to Nkunku’s prolonged absence from the pitch due to injuries. The club has reportedly initiated talks for Osimhen to bolster its attacking prowess.

According to a report by UK publishing firm GiveMeSport, discussions have taken place, and Chelsea is said to be ahead of Arsenal in the race for Osimhen’s signature. However, they face competition from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in securing the Nigerian striker.

In the ongoing 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Cote d’Ivoire, Osimhen is currently representing Nigeria. Despite his commitment to the national team, the striker has hinted at a possible exit from Napoli at the end of the season. In an interview with CBS, Osimhen stated, “I have already made my decision on the next step to do at the end of the season. I already made up my mind. I already have my plan, I know what I want to do, the next step I want to take.”

Rumors suggest that Osimhen may leave Napoli after facing racial abuse from fans, despite his pivotal role in the club’s 2023 title triumph. The situation has led to speculation about the striker’s potential move to another club after the season concludes.
