In an unprecedented move, FIFA, the global governing body of football, has officially declared that the 2030 World Cup will take place in six countries spread across three continents.
According to an announcement made on FIFA’s official website, the historic tournament will be jointly hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco. However, the tournament’s kickoff will see the first three matches played in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay.
This upcoming World Cup, featuring 48 teams, will mark a historic moment as it becomes the first-ever edition to be held on multiple continents. Additionally, all participating host countries will receive automatic qualification.
In commemoration of the centenary of international football, FIFA aims to stage the opening match at the iconic Estádio Centenário in Uruguay, where the inaugural World Cup took place in 1930. In that legendary tournament, Uruguay emerged victorious with a thrilling 4-2 victory over Argentina.
FIFA’s official statement reads, “In 2030, the FIFA World Cup will bring together three continents and six nations, extending a global invitation to celebrate the beautiful game, the Centenary, and the essence of the FIFA World Cup itself.”
“The FIFA Council has unanimously decided that the sole host for the 2030 event will be the collaborative bid presented by Morocco, Portugal, and Spain, who will not only host the tournament but also enjoy automatic qualification, pending the successful completion of FIFA’s bidding process and approval by the FIFA Congress in 2024.”
“In recognition of the historical significance of the inaugural FIFA World Cup, the FIFA Council has also unanimously approved a special centenary celebration ceremony in Montevideo, Uruguay’s capital, where the very first World Cup was held in 1930. Additionally, three World Cup matches will be hosted in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay, respectively.”
The 2026 World Cup, in contrast, will be hosted by three North American nations: Canada, Mexico, and the United States of America.
